Yesterday was Relay for Life. This year it took on a whole new meaning. When we first arrived I couldn't even register as a survivor. I am not sure why exactly. Maybe because it would make it more real, yet again.
The opening ceremony is always very emotional and I always get a little choked up. I knew this year would not be any different. I thought that maybe I would full on sob, however. Luckily we had the boys with us and they distracted me enough to where I did not do any crying. Both boys decided to be extremely loud during the quietest moment. They seemed to like the echo of the grand stand.
Thankfully my friend and his brother were able to walk with me on the survivors walk around the track. I think that would have been pretty tough alone. It was a great day over all. My friend, Beau, did 1,001 burpees throughout the 24 hour time period. For me making it around the track was tough, picking up my boys is tough, but seeing Beau as a survivor and able to do 1,001 burpees in 24 hours is inspiring. I will get through this and be back to being active once again without wanting a nap afterward. However, I do not think 1,001 burpees will be in my future.
We left relay early to get ready for a wedding. Each time I ran my hands through my hair in the shower, I would get handfuls of hair. I actually screamed a little bit because it was so startling. At that point I decided I needed to shave it down the rest of the way. I decided to wait until after the wedding. I did wear my wig to the wedding and I do like it a lot. It looks like my actual hair on a good day. It itched a lot though! So that also reassured me that I needed to shave my head. After the wedding we came home and John and I went outside with his clippers and he got as close to my scalp as he could. I did cry just a little bit. It feels pretty weird and my scalp is very white. I have to work on getting some sun on it so it doesn't look to sickly. I know I need sunscreen though. The last time my scalp saw the sun was in college when I got corn rows on spring break in the Bahamas.
